Vertigo
There are many reasons why someone may be experiencing
…decreased balance, loss of balance and even symptoms of vertigo (which may include dizziness, sensation of spinning, nausea, etc.). Some common causes of loss of balance (LOB) include neuropathy (decreased sensation in the feet), general weakness in the lower extremities, vertigo, stroke, brain injury. Physical therapy can be surprisingly effective at treating balance issues and can help decrease the risk of falling.
Vertigo can multiple origins and can be quite debilitating.
Vertigo can be caused by a condition called BPPV (Benign Proximal Positional Vertigo) wherein small structures in the inner ear become abnormally positioned. This can be diagnosed and corrected by a physical therapist. Vertigo can also be caused by muscle tightness and dysfunctional trigger points in the muscles around and below the neck. Physical therapy can address this muscle tightness and can often greatly improve or in many cases completely resolve complaints of vertigo. An evaluation with one of our physical therapists will help determine the cause of your vertigo and the best course of treatment.
